Boat Insurance Requirements 

Some states do not automatically require boat owners to acquire boat insurance. However, there may be times when boat insurance is required. For example, your lender may require you to have boat insurance if you financed your boat. This is normally required until your loan is paid in full. Also, marinas may require you to have boat insurance if you are planning on storing your boat with them. 

Coverage Options

• Boating liability coverage - This can cover your expenses if you are at fault for a boating accident that results in either property damage or injuries. This coverage will also cover legal fees if you must go to court. 
• Physical damage coverage - Damages that result from a collision are covered under this option as well as boating equipment. 

• Comprehensive coverage - This is like comprehensive auto insurance. It will cover damage to your boat or other watercraft resulting from theft, vandalism, heavy winds, or even fire. 
• Equipment insurance coverage - Theft and damage do happen. GPS devices, fishing gear, and other equipment are covered under this option. 
• Uninsured/underinsured - If you are involved in an accident with another boater and they either have no insurance or not enough to cover damages, this coverage option will protect you.
